Recreational harvest season for Florida Red Snapper in Federal Waters closes on Aug 5, 2008 Florida Federal waters extend 9 nautical miles from the shore off the west coast. With the Red Snapper Sport season opening on April 15 in the Gulf of Mexico and will close on November 1, 2008. The limit in Gulf waters for Sport Anglers is 2 fish per person. The Captian and Crew of “for hire” vessels in the gulf may not keep the recreational bag limit. The size limitation for recreational Red Snapper in the Gulf is 16 inches total length. Alabama has elected to recind its earlier decission to comply with a shorter season and will allow anglers in Alabama to fish for Red Snapper until October 31 instead of Aug 5. I was out last weekend and there are still plenty of snapper around the reefs.
