The Pre Rut season is here and it’s time to look for the late season buck patterns. As the big boy’s start to set up there territories and stake their claim for the late season doe’s, where do we look for them? We start by looking for the rubs. The bigger the rub usually the bigger the buck. Set your stand up with a good view of the rub area and wait. The height of the rub is a good indication of how big the buck is.After the Rub season there is usually a secondary rub season for the unbred doe’s that come into season a second time. This is another chance to land a good size buck. After the secondary season the Bucks retreat back into the wilderness getting away from the possibility of running into hunters with the sound of big guns. The hunting gets more difficult when this happens but they can be still found. The use of Trail Cameras can help a lot to pinpoint Buck paths. Follow the food trail to find the buck’s. Buck’s like Green food! If you can find the green you can find the bucks.

The recreational harvest of greater amberjack from federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico will
reopen on Jan. 1. Federal waters extend beyond 9 nautical miles from shore in the Gulf off Florida.
The National Marine Fisheries Service closed the recreational harvest of greater amberjack in these waters on Oct. 24 because an established annual recreational harvest quota for greater amberjack in the Gulf had been met. Gulf state waters (within 9 nautical miles from shore) were not closed and remain open to the recreational harvest of greater amberjack.
Recreational anglers may keep one greater amberjack of at least 30 inches fork length daily per person in Gulf waters off Florida, and the fish must be landed in a whole condition.

The recreational harvest season for spotted seatrout will reopen in South Florida on Jan. 1. Spotted seatrout harvest has been closed since Nov. 1 in South Florida to help maintain an abundant fishery. The areas affected include Atlantic coast waters south of the Flagler-Volusia county line and Gulf coastal waters south of a line running due west from the westernmost point of Fred Howard Park Causeway, which is 1.17 miles south of the Pinellas-Pasco county line. The maximum daily bag limit for spotted seatrout in these areas is four fish per person. In all Florida waters north and west of these areas, the daily limit is five spotted seatrout per person. The statewide slot limit for spotted seatrout is 15-20 inches total length. However, anglers may keep one spotted seatrout larger than 20 inches as part of the daily bag limits. Spotted seatrout may not be harvested by any multiple hooks with live or dead natural bait, by snagging or by snatch hooking. Spotted seatrout may be taken only with hook and line gear and cast nets and must be landed in a whole condition. The harvest of spotted seatrout will close during the month of February in northeast and northwest Florida waters.

Youth hunts for quail, turkey available at Babcock Ranch Preserve
Applications for youth hunts at Babcock Ranch Preserve in Charlotte County are now available online from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The agency will choose 10 lucky applicants for each of the two quail hunts and seven for each of the two spring turkey hunts. The FWC will choose all hunters through a random drawing. All hunts are three-day events. To be eligible for these hunts, applicants must be at least 12 years old by the first day of the hunt they are applying for and under 16 years old on the last day of the hunt for which they apply. Each permit allows only one youth to hunt, and that youth must be accompanied by an adult supervisor who is 18 or older. The accompanying adult is not permitted to hunt. No license or permit is required of the supervising adult, unless the adult desires to assist in calling on the turkey hunts. Permitted youth and adults will be guided during the hunts. The youth and adult are required to attend and participate in all the Youth Hunting Program of Florida orientation and training events the Friday evening before the scheduled Saturday and Sunday hunts. All members of the hunting party are required to stay with the group from Friday evening until noon on Sunday. The FWC will assign primitive campsites for selectees. Quail hunt applications may be submitted from 10 a.m. EST, Dec. 23, 2009, through 11:59 p.m. EST, Jan. 17, 2010. Quail hunts will occur from Feb. 19 to 21 and from Feb. 26 to 28. Spring turkey hunt applications may be submitted from 10 a.m. EST, Jan. 28, 2010, through 11:59 p.m. EST, Feb. 12, 2010. Turkey hunts will occur from March 19 to 21 and March 26 to 28.
Online applications can be obtained and submitted by visiting MyFWC.com/YHPF, then following the links for the Babcock Ranch Youth Hunts.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved rules consistent with federal regulations to address overfishing of grouper in the Atlantic Ocean and to encourage anglers to help protect Atlantic reef fish when releasing them to the water. Stock assessments indicate Atlantic gag, red and black grouper are undergoing overfishing, which means fishing pressure is too high to be sustainable. Measures have been implemented already in Atlantic federal waters (beyond 3 miles from shore) to reduce the harvest of these species. Nine other kinds of shallow-water groupers also were included in this action to reduce the incidental catch and discard mortality of gag, red and black grouper.
The new FWC rules for Atlantic grouper in state waters are consistent with the federal rules. They establish a three-fish-per-person aggregate daily recreational bag limit for all grouper in Atlantic and Monroe County state waters, prohibit the captain and crew of for-hire vessels from retaining any species in the aggregate grouper bag limit, and allow anglers to keep no more than one gag or black grouper combined in Atlantic and Monroe County state waters.
In addition, the rules prohibit all harvest of shallow-water groupers (including gag, black grouper, red grouper, scamp, red hind, rock hind, coney, grasby, yellowfin grouper, yellowmouth grouper and tiger grouper) from Jan. 1 - April 30 in Atlantic and Monroe County state waters. This spawning season closure applies to all recreational shallow-water grouper harvest and lengthens the previous two-month closure to commercial grouper fishing in the Atlantic. “These rules are intended to help speed the recovery and rebuilding process for Atlantic grouper and reduce the likelihood of harvest overruns and possible additional fishing restrictions in federal waters,” said Rodney Barreto, FWC Chairman. The Commission also approved a federal consistency rule that requires dehooking tools to be aboard commercial and recreational vessels for anglers to use as needed to remove hooks from Atlantic reef fish.
“Dehooking tools are a proven way to limit the handling of fish and help increase the odds that fish will survive when they are released,” Barreto said.

I recieved this in an e-mail and I was so impressed I posted it.
With a 46-point rack and a Boone and Crockett score of 334, it’s hard to argue that a whitetail named Stickers isn’t the biggest buck to ever consume protein in Texas .. Sammy Nooner of Hondo brought Stickers home in February. Since then, fellow deer breeders have been speculating on the price tag. Some estimates involve seven figures for the 6-year-old monarch buck, whose semen fetches $4,000 to $5,000 per straw. Nooner, however, said the price is going to stay between him and the seller - Tommy Dugger, one of the state’s top deer breeders. ‘It’s probably as high as anybody’s ever paid,” he said, ‘but we’re not letting it out; Tommy and I have a gentleman’s agreement.”
